HighFidelity better known as Hi-FI designates a quality standard in sound technology and consumer electronics. The first guidelines for this were laid down as early as the 1960s. Since 1996, there has been a binding Europe-wide standard for performance characteristics (EN 61305).

This HiFi standard defines that loudspeakers should reproduce a very wide frequency response - at least from 100 Hz to 20,000 Hz. To get a better picture, the human ear can perceive signals from about 20 Hz - to 20,000 Hz. But there are, of course, other characteristics. For a music system to carry the label "HiFi", it should have a low noise floor, a large signal-to-noise ratio, low crosstalk and a low distortion factor. Hi-fi loudspeakers must also have a particularly straight frequency response.

Due to the diversity of consumer electronics, it is not always easy to find the right speakers for the living area. Tastes differ, especially in the hi-fi sector. Imposing floor-standing speakers or practical, compact mini speakers: each model has its advantages. Aestheticians prefer the slim line of stereo speakers, and for home cinema lovers there is nothing more beautiful than voluminous floor-standing speakers.

If the individual room furnishings do not allow for larger stereo speakers, compromises must be found. For such special cases, much smaller speakers are recommended. Bookshelf speakers, for example, can be wonderfully integrated into the living room ambience because they hardly take up any space. Micro speakers also have the advantage of being versatile. Especially in the case of stereo PC speakers, the place next to the monitor on the desk is usually the best choice.

Tips for testing the HiFi speakers

When testing, make sure that you choose different media and only use originals. It would also be good if the pieces or films are ones you know well or know how they should sound. An ideal constellation would be:

  • bass-heavy music
  • Action films
  • Concert music consisting of violins and pianos

During the sound test, you will notice how the corresponding differences become noticeable.
